I totally know what you mean about the wife beating you in sports brackets. :)

What an awesome article. It's great that athletes such as these are willing to take the time to meet and greet with the fans who come out to support them. You are right; it doesn't happen often anymore.

Christopher,

I could not agree more about the difference between men and women athletes at the collegiate level. The guys in big time sports take the fans and accolades for granted, and the women are grateful for the support.

I am a season ticket holder for University of New Mexico Women's Basketball. My 82 year old neighbor and I never miss a game, but have not been to a men's game for many years.

The men's game seems to contain a lot of hot-dogging and showboating. Since the women play below the rim, they have to have better fundamentals and teamwork. I am always impressed by their hustle and their class. And unlike their male counterparts, none have been arrested for theft, gun charges, or assault.

Also, there is a big difference between the big, money-making sports and the smaller sports. When I was a swimmer for UNM, I would have fallen over in astonishment if anyone ever asked ME for an autograph. Shoot, I was lucky to get my girlfriend to come to swimming meets!

Of course the Sox players waved you off in favor of your wife. She's prettier than you are! ;-)

This is a fantastic piece about the NDSU volleyball team. My daughter LOVES the game and always has her eye open for role models. The NDSU players are obviously stellar role models. Thank you for introducing us to the team. I'm looking forward to hearing more about them and hope to get my girl to Fargo to catch a game sometime soon.

Female student-athletes have this unbridled joy they exhibit without hesitation that is so wonderful to watch. Even the IUPUI players on the bench, down 2-0 in the match and trailing in the third set, remained up, alive, smiling and encouraging their teammates on. No sour faces, no hanging heads.

Always great to hear from you, Katherine - my best to your entire family!

I'm forwarding this essay to my husband, who is a teacher and varsity field hockey coach. He has always said there's a huge difference between coaching girls and coaching boys, and I'm sure he'll be interested to read your insights here! Hope you guys are doing well!

Thank you, Andy. It was a great time for all of us. Lauren is a special athlete and a classy young lady. She and all of her teammates mirror qualities of their coach, Erich Hinterstocker.

Very nice write up Christopher. I knew from your program that you're sports fan, but wasn't aware of how much. I'm glad to read how much your family enjoyed the Bison game. You made some good points about womens sports. Again, nice article and pictures along with it! I enjoyed it very much!
