Although this doesn’t quite rank with the 1972 Olympic gold medal basketball final between the Soviet Union and the United States – one of the most pathetic injustices in the history of sports where the referees gave the Soviets three tries to beat the U.S…. and on the third try, they finally did it – this certainly qualifies as a blown call of the highest order. It cost the U.S. a World Cup victory. Or did it? It can be argued the Americans got what they deserved since they played the first half of this match as though they wanted to be back in their hotels. So, was this a blown call or not… you decide.
